What Is Pigmentation (Acanthosis Nigricans)
Pigmentation is a skin condition characterized by areas of dark, velvety discoloration in the body folds and creases. The affected skin can become thickened. Areas of the body most often affected include the armpits, groin, neck, elbows, knees, knuckles, lips, palms and the souls of the feet.
Signs of pigmentation are generally noticed by skin changes, where skin darkens becoming thickened and velvety. The skin changes usually appear slowly and the affected skin may also have an odor or itch.
Pigmentation Risk Factors Include:
Obesity – People who are overweight have a higher risk of pigmentation.
Hereditary – Some types of pigmentation can be passed on genetically.
Causes Of Pigmentation:
Insulin resistance – Most people who have pigmentation have also become insulin resistant.
Hormonal disorders – Pigmentation often occurs in people who have disorders such as ovarian cysts, underactive thyroids or problems with the adrenal glands.
Certain drugs & supplements – High-dose niacin, birth control pills, prednisone and other corticosteroids may cause pigmentation.
